Nottingham Radio Control Society Annual Fly-in 2008

words and pics by David Page (gen sec)

Due to the extremely wet weather preceding the show, preparation of the site was delayed, and grass cutting was still in progress when the first visitors were arriving on Friday. With the forecast weather looking good for Saturday, flyers were soon preparing their models and making their first flights to acclimatise to the surroundings. The arrival of the Marquee, toilet facilities and traders completed the setup. Saturday morning produced settled weather and flyers were soon out in force demonstrating their flying skills with a large variety of aircraft. Perhaps the highlight of the day was a Vickers Wellington on its first flight piloted by club member Geoff Graves. A second flight was made on Sunday. Saturday's entertainment concluded with the Vice Chairman's Quiz and the 'Langar Loonies' rock band.

Sunday's weather lived up to expectations with low cloud and intermittent rain showers, which reduced the number of flyers, but confirmation that the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight would be making their flypast improved spirits. Several minutes early, the Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire appeared in formation from the Grantham direction and made three passes overhead before departing toward Burton on Trent and Cosford. Superb!!!. They were followed by a display from 'Team GB', the club's GeeBee Racing team putting up a nine ship formation display of Pylon Racing. After the raffle prize draw had taken place, proceedings started to wind down in the deteriorating weather conditions which meant that the Red Arrows could not make their flypast.

A big thank you to all who were able to attend with their aircraft, and to Club members and Committee for putting on another successful event.

David Page.
